#1076 Brite Deburring/Brite Microfinishing
INDUSTRY:
Electronic/communication
MFG/METHOD:
Stamping
ALLOY:
304 Stainless Steel
PROBLEM:
This part is used as a cover for a battery power source. Stainless steel was originally specified to withstand a highly corrosive environment. The customer needed to deburr the edges on the part, but also needed a bright finish, that would be smooth to the touch.
SOLUTION:
Electropolishing deburred the part equally as well as tumbling, but without discoloring or impinging the material’s outer surface. Being a non-mechanical process, electropolishing does not bend, dent or distort the part in any way. Electropolishing smoothed out the surface, brightened the part, and enhanced the corrosion resistance, all in one process.
Note to Engineer: While tumbling and vibratory finishing offers a low cost means of finishing metal parts, variations in machine loading, media density and other factors can contribute to warping or damage to complex stampings. Electropolishing is a good solution on such parts, and is especially effective when stamping and blanking dies are well maintained. On poorly maintained dies, the burr condition becomes excessive, beyond the deburring characteristics of electropolishing.
