The component is used in Europe in an important tracheal application. The customer needed to insure that the part was free of contaminants and offered maximum corrosion resistance to stand up in sterilization procedures. Finally, weld discoloration had to be removed for cosmetic purposes.


Electropolishing removes the outer layer of the material, taking with it the contaminants imbedded by tooling. At the same time, electropolishing removes the weld discoloration. The process leaves the part bright clean and passive, with increased corrosion resistance.

Note to engineer: Electropolishing has been used effectively on a wide range of surgical applications, including a host of instruments. Often when different components are used in an instrument assembly, varying base metals in that assembly have different finishes. We recommend a leveling operation such as bead or vapor blasting of all surfaces prior to electropolishing. Doing so will provide a uniform appearance on all assembly components.
