1056 – Aluminum aircraft reflector needing uniform improvement of parabolic areas.

#1056 Brite Microfinishing/Brite Ultracleaning/Decorative

Brite-Ultracleaning

Industry:

Aerospace - Manufacturers of reflector and reflectors for aircraft use.

Mfg/Method:

Forming

Alloy:

1100-0 Aluminum

Problem:

This small and delicate part is used in an aircraft lighting application. The customer needed a clean part overall, but also shiny enough to improve reflectivity on the critical surfaces.

Brite-Ultracleaning

Solution:

Electropolishing removed the outer layer of metal, considerably brightening the parabolic reflector areas. The smoother surface helps to create a more stable, concentrated beam from the reflective surface. The entire part was clean and ready for final assembly.

Note to engineer: On applications requiring highly reflective or optically flat surfaces, a combination of abrasive polishing and electropolishing can achieve very low Ra values. However, matching the cutting and smoothing operations is critical. We recommend you contact our sales engineers for manufacturing tips and ideas to meet those higher standards.
