Industry:

Automotive

Mfg/Method:

Machining and welding

Alloy:

304 & 316 Stainless Steel

Problem:

This assembly is used in an important leak testing application under a high vacuum environment. Used in a continuous manufacturing process, it needed to be highly corrosion resistant. The part is extremely heavy and large, weighing approximately 1500 pounds. The part is 19” deep, 34” wide, and 87” long.

Solution:

Electropolishing removed the outer layer of metal containing the contaminants and particulates. The machined areas became brighter than the hot rolled finish on the angles and the inside of the vessel. The varying finish levels are a result of the varying base metal surfaces. Although the finish levels were different, the entire part met all standards for corrosion.
