Electropolishing Case Study: Formed Tubes Needing Surface Contaminants Removed

MFG/METHOD

Formed Tubes

ALLOY

316 stainless steel

PROBLEM

Our customer requires the cleanest surface possible. The formed tubes are part of an instrument, which detects volatile and hazardous gasses. The instrument is for military readiness, detecting hazardous gasses in advance of a chemical attack. The location of this instrument is an open-air oceanic environment.

SOLUTION

Our customer began by electropolishing a group of samples. By removing a controlled amount of metal from the surface, all oxides and embedded impurities were removed. Able Electropolishing was called upon to provide a clean and bright finish. The outside surfaces are electropolished while the inside surfaces are fully passivated. Since there are no coatings to chip or peel, the bright finish will last for years, even in an oceanic environment.
