Electropolishing: Precise Material Removal for Sizing

Electropolishing is an ideal process for achieving precise and accurate final sizing of parts that may be oversize as a result of operator or machine error, heat treatment or other reasons.

It is also recommended for fragile or machined parts that cannot be sized using other methods because of the potential for damage. Parts that require unique or special tapering, precise weight control or simultaneous deburring and sizing are often electropolished. Electropolishing can achieve consistent results across all surfaces with a degree of control unmatched by other traditional metal removal processes, calibrated to tolerances as low as +/- .0001” per surface, depending on the alloy and the application.

How Able Electropolishing Achieves Precise Stock Removal

Determining the precise amount of material to be removed often begins with our free sample process, in which parts or part prototypes are electropolished to determine the precise amount of material removal required to achieve the desired results. For sizing, this can include material removal to achieve a specific material thickness for parts where the needed thickness is not readily available.

For example, a medical manufacturer using a special-order walled 304 stainless steel to create a surgical tube could not easily get the sizing needed without added expense and the introduction of burrs in the process of cutting the material. Electropolishing of coupons to the desired tolerance enabled the manufacturer to then stamp the parts to the needed specifications, saving time and money.
