PROBLEM:

These parts are machined out of extruded material. The customer needed smooth surfaces and to deburr the edges of the parts after machining. Several of the bores were of exacting tolerance, and dimensional control would not allow for those bores to be enlarged. As a result, Able masked specified holes during the electropolishing to meet the customer’s needs.

SOLUTION:

Electropolishing was used to improve the microfinish and remove the small machining burrs while maintaining dimensional tolerances. The process was applied economically considering the high cost and relative inconsistency of hand deburring or mechanical finishing. As the process dissolves surface metal, imbedded impurities from normal fabrication were removed as well, extending resistance to corrosion.


Note to Engineer: Electropolishing is not recommended as a substitute for plating, coating or other corrosion preventative measures where metal surfaces are subject to normal corrosive environments. However, the removal of surface impurities can extend the shelf life of unprotected metal surfaces beyond normal ranges. If you have a non-stainless component subject to corrosion, we recommend you provide a sample for processing. Your tests will determine suitability for the environment.
