This part is machined from stainless steel and heat treated for hardness. The outside edge around the part is the most critical surface. In final assembly, the remaining micro burrs and “as machined” surfaces caused galling problems when mated with other components.


Electropolishing removed the burrs from the teeth on the outside edge and smoothed out the mating surfaces. The part functioned as designed.

Note to Engineer: Virtually all traditional machining operations leave residual burrs and tooling marks. When galling or friction problems arise from those surfaces, secondary operations can be very expensive on complex components. Most second pass operations rely on abrasive contact to offending metal at complex angles and perhaps hundreds of “faces”. Electropolishing uses chemicals and electricity that flow over complex surfaces to provide uniform deburring at a relatively low cost.
